Project Title:
CO2 Sources and Sinks in Agricultural Soils

Through changes in input and turnover rates, soil utilisation leads to a change in carbon stocks; thus, soils are either CO2 sources or sinks. The aim of this project is to strengthen the sink function of agricultural soils, reduce sources, quantify the changes, and highlight suitable measures for improving the CO2 balance of soil use. This should also simultaneously improve other ecosystem functions.
Here, for the first time, the carbon balance of Swiss agricultural soils is comprehensively presented for the greenhouse-gas inventory. Special measures such as the use of plant charcoal to reduce emissions or adapt to climate change are examined to determine their impact on soil C balance.
