Promoting Species and Habitats in Agriculture

18-16-19-06-02

The project’s focus lies on the promotion of target- and indicator species in farmed lowland wetlands. Suitable areas for this purpose are identified on a national map, and the current state of these species is evaluated. The promotion measures include new and better-adapted production systems, ecological compensation measures, and nature conservation.

Approaches rarely practised in Switzerland, such as e.g. wet rice production, or vegetable production on water surfaces, are tested in pilot trials. Reviews of the literature summarise the state of knowledge on the effects of waterlogged and/or drained soils on climate, water regime, and nutrient and pesticide inputs into surface water. This provides the basis for decisions on how to deal with such areas in future.
