Nutrition of Lactating Sows and their Large Litters

Nutrition of Lactating Sows and their Large Litters

Litter size and the number of piglets weaned annually per sow have increased steadily over the last few decades. The nutrient requirements of highly prolific sows and low-birth-weight piglets have become challenging issues. Appropriate feeding of the lactating sow should ensure optimal milk production, thereby guaranteeing that the piglets are well supplied with nutrients. The aim is to investigate the supply of amino acids and minerals to the sow, as well as to develop a protein- and energy-rich supplement for low-birth-weight piglets. As part of the ‘Pig Efficiency’ project, the influence on bone mineralisation of a phosphorus-restricted diet during the growing/finishing period in gilts will also be investigated.
